The IGBT gate driver was required to control the speed of a high power motor driving a high pressure gas compressor. At the surface this would be a straightforward problem, but this equipment operates down hole in a high pressure, high temperature environment. The circuit provides four fully-isolated IGBT drives arranged in an H-bridge and powered from 1.1kV. The control circuit is configured to guarantee that the outputs do not overlap. The choice of suitable components to operate from a 115°C cold(!) wall is a significant challenge and severely constrains the design. Although devices that meet maximum junction temperature limits can be found, all too often they are not available in appropriate packages. |
